Empowering just transitions in cities
FEM.GREEN is a project focused on promoting gender-inclusive green transitions in European cities.

It addresses the need for social justice in climate action by empowering women and community leaders through non-formal adult education. By equipping communities with tools to influence decision-making, FEM.GREEN ensures urban decarbonisation efforts consider gender inequalities rather than reinforce them. The initiative supports collective action aligned with the European climate agenda to create cities that serve everyone equally.

Climate action cannot be just unless it is inclusive. We exist to challenge the gender-blind nature of environmental policies

These often overlook how climate change and green transitions impact women and marginalised communities differently. By centering gender in the conversation, FEM.GREEN ensures that decarbonisation strategies do not perpetuate existing inequalities, but instead empower those most affected.

The project addresses a crucial gap by providing non-formal education and practical tools to community leaders, practitioners, planners, designers, and policymakers enabling them to play an active role in shaping greener and more equitable cities. FEM.GREEN goes beyond sustainability; it is rooted in justice, inclusion, and the transformation of urban design to truly reflect the diverse needs and voices of society.

FEM.GREEN follows a co-creation process that emphasizes peer-to-peer learning and local testing to promote gender-inclusive green transitions in cities.
  1. Peer-to-Peer Learning. An international working group of professionals, students, and activists in sustainable and feminist development form the foundation of the project. Through shared spaces for deliberation and debate, participants collaborate on key topics, fostering trust, open knowledge sharing, and network-building. This non-hierarchical approach creates a community invested in collective responsibility and social innovation.

  2. Case Study - Local Testing. Local testing is vital for adapting the project to real-world contexts. Workshops combine training, debate, and hands-on work, allowing communities to test the project's Toolbox. This process not only transfers knowledge but also refines the project's outcomes to ensure they are practical, relevant, and usable in local settings

The Gendered City operates at the intersection of community and urban life, championing gender-sensitive design and advancing bold, sustainable ideas. Guided by an intersectional feminist approach, it strives to build cities that are truly gender-equal, developing innovative indexes, tools, methodologies, and frameworks to support this vision.

It launched FEM.DES, the world’s largest global network of feminist design experts, localising actions and tools to deliver context-specific, tailor-made solutions for more inclusive and equitable cities.
